A Green Solution: Tyco Recognized for Responsible Retail

Here at Tyco, we have a passion to protect what matters most. We are committed to producing products and providing services to customers in a safe, responsible manner to respect the health and safety of our employees, the environment, our customers, shareholders and our communities. When it comes to environmental responsibility, we not only focus on our own products, but also provide benefits to all participants across the retail value chain. Our product compliance certifications include participation in some of our customer’s Green Partner Programs including Sony, Nintendo, Canon and Pfizer – among the most rigorous standards in the world.

That’s why we are proud to announce Tyco has been selected for a 2012 “Green Supply Chain” award. This prestigious recognition comes from Supply & Demand Chain Executive – the leading provider in solution-based intelligence for supply chain ROI – to identify companies whose efforts in sustainable business practices stand out from the crowd. More than 100 companies were evaluated and judged based on the clarity and content of their environmental goals and strategy, the extent of the steps being taken, the impact of their results to date and projected results, and the form and presentation of the information provided.

“At Tyco, we exercise a holistic view on environmental responsibility, complementing the existing green practices our retail customers and consumer goods manufacturers have in place to work seamlessly throughout their operations,” said Nancy Chisholm, vice president and general manager, Tyco Retail Solutions. “We are honored to be recognized by Supply & Demand Chain Executive’s 2012 Green Supply Chain Awards for our efforts.”

We took our “green” and safety initiatives to the next level when we launched our Vital World program in 2009. The program is a series of steps the company is taking to reduce the impact our products and processes have on the environment. Vital World also supports the execution of green supply chain strategies for our retailers in a wide variety of fundamental ways including:

  • Energy reduction— We design resource-conserving devices and processes for retailers, keeping our operations and facilities efficient, and using renewable energy sources where possible. Tyco’s Sensormatic brand Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) systems, video solutions, traffic counting sensors and RFID-based inventory visibility readers are designed to minimize environmental impact system-wide, without compromising efficiency or security. The latest generation of Sensormatic EAS systems delivers wide exit coverage and equivalent system sensitivity, while consuming 50% less power than prior generations. Energy consumption is reduced even further in “Power Save” mode.
  • Materials/packaging reduction initiative— Tyco conserves materials by reducing, reusing and recycling product and packaging components. For example, our latest EAS systems utilize 35% less plastic and 25% less packaging than earlier designs. As an addition benefit, many of our Sensormatic brand devices are multi-purpose, reducing the total number of components required.
  • Chemical/material management— All Sensormatic branded hardware is compliant with the European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHs) Directive. Tyco’s genuine Sensormatic labels meet all environmental standards governing our material and chemical content, using preferred “Green Chemistry” materials that have less environmental impact. Tyco’s electronic products are certified by regulatory agencies in all countries in which they operate, in compliance with UL, CE, FCC and Directive 94/62/EC guidelines. Furthermore, preferred materials are used in our electronics, to reduce any negative impact on the environment.

Genuine Sensormatic Tags and Devices

Tyco’s genuine Sensormatic EAS “hard tags” also play a role in our green initiative strategy. These rugged, anti-theft tags are the standard for high-integrity protection of apparel and soft goods. They’re completely reusable and more than 750 million tags are reapplied by manufacturers though Tyco’s innovative tag recirculation processes. Tyco is also leading the industry with multi-purpose devices that reduce the need for redundant hardware, the latest providing integrated data for both traffic intelligence and shrink management in the store.

Today, Tyco Retail Solutions delivers intelligent, integrated retail performance and security solutions deployed today at over 80 percent of the world’s top 200 retailers. We offer environmentally responsible initiatives retailers can easily integrate into existing sustainability programs. Our solutions tap into the future of products and solutions now to provide retailers with real-time visibility to their inventory and assets to improve operations, optimize profitability, and create memorable shopper experiences.
